Hazards of asbestos
There are many buildings in every city that were constructed a few decades back. For example, schools and colleges would have been constructed a long time back. The problem with these building is that the people that live or work there would be exposed to the risks associated with asbestos. The asbestos is usually found in old buildings in the form of walls, kitchens, floor coverings, etc. Asbestos was used rampantly in the earlier days because of its abrasive and fire-resistant properties, since its ill effects on the health were not documented back then.
The usual problems that one could face with exposure to asbestos are mesothelioma and asbestosis. They are respiratory diseases that are caused because of prolonged inhalation the asbestos fibre while working in an old building. The longer one is exposed to asbestos, the greater are the chances of them acquiring any of the diseases related to it. It has been observed that 75% of the people who suffer from mesothelioma die within the span of just one year, and hence one needs to be careful while working with asbestos material or its removal.

Those people whose profession needs them to handle asbestos materials and their removal should get regular checkups done from a doctor. This is especially necessary for those who work in old buildings and in mines as they would be the ones that would be exposed the most. One should also look out for the symptoms of asbestos related diseases. These symptoms include persistent coughing, shortness of breath and mucus in the blood. A sad fact about asbestos is that its ill effects are observed after a long time, when it is too late for a treatment, as the asbestos fibres inhaled remain in a latent condition for a long time inside the body.
Sometimes, the symptoms may not seem to be very serious, but even then one should make sure that their doctor is consulted. This is absolutely necessary for those people who work in old buildings and in mines. This is where you would find the most exposure to asbestos. In the case of old buildings, the removal of asbestos material should be done very carefully and in accordance with the guidelines established by the state for the removal of any sit containing asbestos, so as to avoid health complications for the workers.

If you take the case of old schools, they are usually covered with old vinyl floors. Asbestos has been used by constructors for a lot of years because of its higher strength when compared to other alternatives. Also, it is used as a fire resistant mineral that is essential for the building. Because of all of these properties, it was used very regularly in all the buildings that were constructed in the 1950s to 1980s. But it is now becoming a health hazard and people have realised the various side effects that can be caused because of exposure to asbestos.
